French Communication and Culture Formerly Basic French

French (English Program)

French language courses in the English program offer the opportunity for learners to communicate in French and develop an understanding and appreciation of Francophone culture. There are 2 existing curriculums taught in Pembina Trails schools: Early Start French for Kindergarten to Grade 3, and French: Communication and Culture for Grades 4 to 12.

“While learning about Francophone cultures, learners share about their own cultures. These rich intercultural exchanges in the classroom foster mutual understanding, respect, and compassion toward people of all cultures.” (Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning)

  • Early Start French (K-3 English program):
    • Many Pembina Trails Schools offer Early Start French in their Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes. These classes “aim to provide students with an exposure to the French language in order to foster a positive attitude towards learning French, to introduce simple language structures for purposeful communication, to provide a context for the application of developing literacy skills, and to develop an awareness of Francophone cultures.”  (Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning)
  • French: Communication and Culture (4 to12 English Program):
    • Students in Pembina Trails are expected to participate in French Communication and Culture classes in Grades 4 to 8. In high school, they are encouraged to continue their language learning through credit-based opportunities that allow for further language mastery and extension into the francophone community.
    • The French courses aim to provide all students in Manitoba with quality French instruction which enables them to communicate in the French language and to appreciate francophone cultures.
    • The goals of the courses are to give students the opportunity to:
      • acquire the necessary language skills to communicate in French;
      • value the learning of French as a tool for personal, intellectual, and social growth;
      • demonstrate an appreciation of Francophone cultures;
      • further develop intercultural communication skills that are essential to all global citizens.” (Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning)
