Key Considerations
Building a new school is complex and costly. These are some of the questions we wrestle with when determining whether a school should be built:
- Will the location meet the educational needs of all students?
- Is the Division being fiscally responsible with respect to building, staffing, and maintaining schools in ALL of Pembina Trails?
- Is there suitable land? Typically, a 10 to 12 acre site is recommended for a K-8 school built for 600 students. A day care with a suitable play area and a separate pick-up and drop-off zone would be included in each K-8 school. A larger tract of land - approximately 25 acres - is required for a high school with a capacity of 1,000 students.
- How many single and multiple family residences will likely be constructed in each area?
- What is the ratio of school-age children per household?
- Is there existing space available in schools in nearby communities such as Fort Richmond, Richmond West, Waverley Heights, Fort Garry and Whyte Ridge?
